“Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture.”

Swahili for “First Fruits”, also spelled Kwanza. An adaptation of an African harvest festival, celebrated from December 26 to January 1. It was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, a professor of black studies at California State University in Long Beach, who added an additional “a” to the end of the name to distinguish it from the African festival.
